Comments:         I was there when the final "Hun" sortie
landed in June or July '71. The "Bookie Bus Stop" had been loaded onto a flat bed and brought out to the flight line as a joke. I believe the 35th wing commander was supposed to be the last to land, but one Hun, flown by Capt "Buffalo Chip" (can't remember his last name) made a high-speed pass just above the runway, much to the delight of all those of us who were out to watch the fini flight.

bad and some of the planes were hit. I also remember
there were some Australian's there with a with I think a

Comments:         The Air Force Times Science Fiction
written from who knows where in the world 1968. I slept
in two hootches two stories tall no air conditioning
in a 2 man room. Next moved to new 35 AMS
Sqadron hootch 20 rooms open floor plan 2 people
per cubicle that if you slept in the top bunk and
jumped out of bed you hit the two lockers that
were a part of the room. Where was the air
conditioned 2, 4 and 6 man rooms...hmmm? Dusty
yes NCO club yes, Airmens club was pitiful.
Entry to down town Phan Rang banned so Dodge
City was the primary choice of recreation to the
Airmen. Mayor of Phang Rang was the reason for
banning visiting the city do to Pathet Lao,
Chicom and NVA activity in the area. Someone
asked the question someplace about getting hit
with rockets and mortars. 1969 Phan Rang by
number not volume beat out Da Nang meaning we had
more weapons dropped on us than they did and I
can testify to that in that working graveyard
shift a month didn't go buy where I didn't find
myself in the bunker next to the 35 AMS building.
One last thing the 3rd snack bar was next to the
hanger across the street from the AMS building
had the worst hamburgers in the world. After 6
weeks and Mess Hall food they tasted pretty
good!
Google Earth shows the base to have been pretty
much taken apart for concrete, steel and other
materials. One whole runway is gone. Also looks
like most of the barracks are gone and may have
become a ghost air base as no aparent airplanes
are anywhere near the base. The base if the info
is correct eventually became a T37 base that sent
their planes to support the take over of Saigon
in 1975. So the Keesler AFB trainers of the Viet
Nam pilots was correct they trained the Air Force
for the North Vietnamese!

article by a vet that recently returned to Vietnam as
a tourist, and it got me into searching for
photos and information on our base. I also
looked it up on Google Earth. Base is now a
civilian airport but it appears mostly abandoned.
Many circa. '68 buildings (barracks, etc.) are no
longer there, so it's hard to get a bearing except
by using the runway. There is also a big old cloud
overtop of where the fighter revetments were. I am
nostalgic by nature, so I really enjoyed turning
back the clock 42 years to remember my time on
Phan Rang.

I had several friends in 2 Squardron and
remember the night in late February '71 when
they lost one of their Canberras piloted by the
Squadron Commander. It was the same night I was
promoted to Captain. We sat in the bar at the
club for about three hours waiting for word of
the aircraft's crew. When word finally came
that both men had been picked up and were safe
and sound the celebration was very much more
than just a promotion party.

Comments:         My biggest challenges were getting
throttle
actuators for the J-85s and Type II cleaning
solvent for docks so they could clean the R2800s.
Depot never could get the actuators and they
finally broke the solvent problem by getting it in
Singapore instead of a stateside depot. Also, we
had quite a time getting straight brooms so the
crew chiefs could clean out the cargo bays after
hauling elephants, nauseous native personnel and
leaking diesel fuel bladders. Flashlight
batteries were a problem as were the cargo
rollers. Other than that, a piece of cake.

had a
mortar, rocket and sapper attack. A bomb loaded
F-100 was hit below the tower and tower
personnel could be heard on Giant Voice telling
someone to get them out of there. The next
morning at Security Police building, all the
failed sappers were laid out for photographers
to take their pictures. Not a good night for
Charlie. As I remember, a K-9 alerted to the
attack before Charlie could make it to the
flight line.

Comments:         Great site. My Dad was Msgt. Russell
C.
Gillingham and was assigned to PRAB in 1966, He
worked in the F-100 engine shop, and was one of
the guys who came up with the idea of cooling
down F-100 engine bays using a portable A/C
cart. They shoved the yellow flex hose in the F-
100's intake, cooling the sun heated bay down
preventing burns during engine removal.
Somewhere in my Dad's stuff there are super 8
color movies of his birds taking off and
dropping napalm on nearby hills. This was
either at Phan Rang or at Phu-Cat as he was
transferred there from PRAB. Dad passed away 7
years ago, He served 3 years in WWII, was in
Korea before hostilities began, went to Vietnam
and retired in 1972.

In 1976 I was with the 726th Tactical Control
Squadron at Homestead when all of our A/C units
went down, without which our computer would
overheat and shut down the entire system. This
meant the F-4 RTU wing was down too. I
mentioned the A/C cart trick to the NCOIC of
maintenance and he ran with it. We sure looked
funny with the scope dopes washed down in sweat
and the computer guys wearing parkas coming out
of the same ops shelter at the end of the day!
I guess the acorn never falls far from the tree.

Comments:         This is an interesting site. I'm finding
more
about what went on at PRAB than when I was
there. I spent a lot of evenings at the old
theatre watching Batman & Combat re-runs and the
occasional C-47 minigun tracer show out in the
distance. Then it was off to the airman's club
for great fried chicken and a couple of 10 cent
Budweisers. I spent most of my days off snoozing
on a picnic table under the pines at that
beautiful beach. The chopper pilots on patrol
would always buzz anyone sleeping on the raft.
Phan Rang was definitely a good place to have to
spend a tour of duty. Thanks.

I spent some time operating a dozer and loader for
you guys and borrowed equipment to build a oval at
our domestic area.
We are all getting a little old now, but good to
look back at some of the friendships we made.
Best wishes to all who visit this page, have some
great memories of time spent with you guys.
PS:Had a few flights in C123's, every time I see
one in a movie brings back memories.

I still remember the feeling of standing in the

remember the walk up to the plane taking us back
to "The World". But what I remember most is the
tight relationships with the men I served with.

still had the mess kits then old metal trays for
midnight breakfast on the 315th side of the base,
had to clean them ourselves after the meal. Got

the 464th TFS in LA. flying Red Devels. Change

If I remember right, I worked on a C-124
Globmaster for an oil leak.. (I was the only one
there, that had ever worked on them, at that
time)...

When I left Phan Rang, I was given an "Official"
Jet Engine Mechanic AFSC by the Air Force..
(Guess we no longer needed "Recip Engine

Had "Ding

into hooches and wooden barracks were being
built just before I left.
I painted several sleds with nose art. Sure
wish there were pics of them now. Often wonder
were the old aircraft went and all the guys that
crewed them. Its been so long now. All the pics
I had from that era have been lost but sites like
this bring back so many memories....
I retired in 79 and went to the wilds of Maine
where I could enjoy mountains, four seasons,
trees, wildlife and escape the roar of the J-57.
I haven't any luck finding any other crew
chiefs from my era. I know they are out there
somewhere.....sure would like to hear from any
of them. Lots of stories to tell.

program. On my second stay at PRAB I lived in a
baracks on the hill close to either the NCO or
Airman's club. I had quite a few interesting
TDYs from PRAB and DaNang. Kadena, Okinawa to
replace a prop regulator. While working up on
the prop I was able to reach into my tool box,
get my camera and shoot a picture of an SR-71
taking off. On May 11, 71 three engine mechanics
and I went TDY to Phenom Phen to change an
engine on a AC-119G. It initially promissed to
be a great TDY but plans were changed by 7th AF
and we could not stay there overnight and had to
be returned to RVN every evening. We did get
off of the airport for a few meals. I remember
when the 14 Special Operations Wing was
deactivated at PRAB. Part of the ceremony was a
flyover of all the various types of aircraft
operated by the Wing. Jim Harmon a fellow Prop
mechanic recorded the flyover. I sure hope the
exposure became film and that it survives
today. Jim and I were also at the Prop Shop at
Nha Trang in 1966 when the 14 Air Commando Wing
was activated and our unit changed from the 6253
Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron to
the 14th Field Maintenance Squadron.

that were
working on the 123's. I was on flight status for
several months to repair or cannibalize parts for
another aircraft. One picture I saw of the
flightline showed the siren on top of a shop.
That was the Avionics/Com-Nav bldg. When you were
in the shop, you could hear the relay click prior
to the siren sounding. Many of us were out the
door long before the siren wound up to its
highest pitch. Unfortunately, our bunker took a
direct hit one night. It survived because AM2
steel used for runways was on top of the plywood,
and covered with sandbags. What fun it was to
fill sandbags in 105 degree heat.
Thanks for all of the pictures and memories. -
Looking for more.

in me.
I remember when we were infiltrated in Jan and
then in Feb 69 by CHARLIE. If I remember
correctly an F-100 and a B-57 were damaged.
The Super-cops shot I think 11 VC and then
displayed them in the parking lot in front of
the BX. One VC was a barber who used to cut my
hair at the barber shop.

It was also on the 18th of May 1969 that I lost
a very good friend of mine from the 310th Carl
Wanner. I don't want to get in to that, this is
the first that I was able to talk about it in
almost 40 years.

Well I would like to thank you so very much for
having this site so that others can see the
conditions and the environment in which we lived.

you wish.

Again THANKS.

Comments:         Wonderful website! I'm the Historian
for the
315th Airlift Wing. We fly C-17s out of
Charleston and stay pretty busy supporting OEF
and OIF. I just recently added some of the
history of the 315 ACW and 315 SOW to our
website. I also took a trip to Maxwell AFB to
look at the 3-1-5 Wing histories from 1965-
1967. I managed to copy close to a thousand
pages of those histories and they now sit in my
office alongside the histories of the 315 Troop
Carrier Group from WWII and the 315 Troop
Carrier Wing from Korea. My plan is to go back
and copy another two or three years worth until,

Comments:         I worked in the Squadron Hdqtrs of the
366 Civil
Engr Sqdn. Sgt Bray was our first sgt. Don't
remember the sqd cmdr, just remember is was a
pleasant guy. I shared a "hootch" with AlC
Alfonzo Powell (plumber), AlC "Rowdy" Yates, A1C
Alfonzo ?, SSgt Wright (refrigeration), A1C Ray
Leitch (electrician), a fellow named Roger, who
worked in plumbing. Others I just don't remember
at this moment. The first week of each month it
would rain constantly. The rest of the month it
was dusty-dry. We'd take our laundry down from
the clothes line and shake the dust out of them
and put them away as "clean" clothes. At least
we had the sweat out of them. On Sunday's
several of us would volunteer to do dike building
around the town of Phan Rang to help out the
local citizenry and build goodwill with the
locals. I took no R&R as I just wanted to do my
job and go home for good which I did in January
1967 to Spokane, WA where my wife was waiting for
me with the Christmas tree still standing.

tonight after MANY months. Thanks for continuing
to post my photos and offering a little 'Shelter
from the Storm' we call capitalism, as Dylan
would say.

Quick PRAB memories: sneaking into the 'O' club
by climbing the hill from Red Horse..and
getting 'made' by one of our OICs, stealing a
Korean jeep from the NCO club and abandoning it
at the bottom of the hill, catching a 122mm one
afternoon in Red Horse, having SOS 'light up the
night' over our hootches, stealing slap flares
off the MP jeeps, burgers, beer, and Filipina
bands at the Red Horse Club, trips to the beach,
and getting busted for swimming in a restricted
area up at Cam Ranh 2 days before my DEROS!

Comments:         Hey met you today at the Wallgreens
and had to
check in. I work nights so I keep strange hours.
Just an observation. Man your base was kick ass
with the perm structures. In Oman we had one (1)
semi ridged structure to operate 14 C130s out of,
the most "fun" stuff was trying to do prop
changes in 40kt winds. In Kuwait we had a
Kuwaitie hanger (they were always bitching to get
it back) that we ran MX out of, however we could
not fit a -130 in the thing. We used it on the
down wind side to do prop changes because of the
50+kt winds! Amazingly enough the JSDAF
(Japanese AF) was on the same base, after just a
few months they built a hanger that you could
slide a -130 into and they had A/C. They had a
few other perks that were leaving us jelous, but
would still seem tame to the V/N era guys. Now
you would think that you signed up to be a monk
vs. being in the Air Force!

Cheers!

1969 was
37 years after arriving at Phan Rang. I was a 3
striper when I arrived and sewed on Staff before
getting out. Worked as a crew chief on flying
status. Was Line chief when things got real
thin. Worked with a GREAT group of guys, G.
Preston of Rockville Center, NY; Phil Nufer of
PA; Dugan and a lot who's names escape me.
Looking back, it was a real growing-up time in
my life.

facilities that at any stateside army base I was

Rarely think
about that year. Lost all my photos of my tour
in Vietnam. Was a C-123 Mechanic in the docks.
I remember washing my fatuges in Avgas to get all
the oil and grease out. I remember nights in the
bunker during rocket attacks, fliping coins to
see who was gonna race up to the fridge and get
the beer. I remember waking up in a wheel barrel
in front of the barracks on the morning after my
19th birthday, dried puke on my T-shirt. I
remember paying a buck to watch my first skin-
flick on some make-shift screen behind our
operations building. I remember lots of faces
but not many names. Retired from the Air Force
in 1988. Currently a aircraft Maintenance
Instructor with Northwest Airlines.

delivering ammo to Shadow. One night we re-
supplied them three times as they were fighting
VC/NVA close enough for us to see them firing,
but not hear it. Out in the bomb dump and at
times along the perimeter I was lucky enough to
have them circle and fire over us at targets
outside the perimeter. Truly AWSOME.
Great site. Sure nice to see all the pictures,
especially the air photos of the base. Thanks for
sharing.

great site after
looking at my photos of Phan Rang on my site, all
mostly from the Army perspective. Phan Rang was
our base camp and training area for nubie's. I
remember jumping from C-7's into an area the AF
construction guys were clearing for runways, and
watching with glee (those of us who were not the
draggies) paratroopers being dragged into huge
piles of thorn bushes. Never got over to the AF
side other than to fly in or out. It was like the
big city to us.

I remember the same things Dias does. tents then
hootches. moving the Comm Center to the flight

and the constant dirt from construction. I went to
Dalat atround 10-66 and only came back to Phan
Rang for my discharge physical in 2-67.
I think they had a partially paved road and a
couple permanent wooden structures by then. Memory
gets a little fuzzy after all these years but I
was proud of the job we did there. Great bunch of

It has been a long time since I left Viet Nam and
just recently, in June saw my best freind from
those days. It took a long time to find him. I
really am glad he told me about your site. I was
a crewchief on the F-100. My plan was tail number
784 and named "Chicagos' Own" for my pilot Capt.
Dave Waggoner from Chicago. I have some photos
also but don't have a scanner. Maybe with this
find I'll get one to add to this great spot.
Also, I was the crewchief that went to Cambodia
to help fix the F-100 that Warren Turner talks
about on the first page.

Comments:         A great site. Good pics. I have quite a
few
pictures which I hope to get scanned one of these
days.
I was assigned to 315 CAMS for administrative
purposes but lived w/aircrews beneath the O-Club
hill in one of the old Colo ANG hooches. It had a
beautiful hardwood bar they must've brought from
home. I hung out with other "intell pukes" from
35 TFW and 4th SOW. I briefed misc units on base,
including some 2RAAF aircrews after they first
encountered SAMs in the DMZ late in '71. Although
not rated I flew wherever I could w/123s to get a
feel for the country. I visited most of the areas
we "delivered" to - saw the ending of the war
from a lot of different locales.... Also flew a
few FAC missions in O-2s and got to barf in my
helmet first time - impressed the hell out of the
pilot.Had occasion to visit Cambodia when we had
to deliver some parts to a F-100 who had to
divert to Pnomh Penh. I remember a Lt. Ralph
Santos who came to intell in late 71, Lt "Speedy"
Gonzalez (35 intell?) who won the footrace up Nui
Dat, Capt Sittler (35 or 4 SOW intell?)and a red-
headed capt in 35 intell whose name I can't
recall. All in all, a weird and interesting year.
Later went back to Thailand, was pulled to US to
be a debriefer for the returning POWs. Would be
glad to hear from anyone.
Peace

Comments:         Greetings from an old neighbor just up
the road
at Cam Ranh Bay. I was a C-7A pilot in the 535th
TAS/483rd Composite Wing and made many visits to
Phan Rang. I also maintain the C-7A Caribou
Association web site at www.C-7ACaribou.com.
Take a look if you get the chance.

Comments:         Mike, You have a great site that was
my good
fortune to become aware of a few years ago. And
because of it I have gained a new friend in you.
Thanks for letting me post and share my pictures
on your site. It really brings back the memories
which were mostly good. And it is really
interesting to see the pictures from all of the
others and to see what PRAB was like in it's
early days. Keep up the good work!!

Tan Son Nhut. I was at PRAB only a few days in
late Feb '68 during TET. We flew our C-123K's
there for safety purposes.

Comments:         Mike, you're right up there on my list
of most
influential people/friends! Because of your
site, I've been able to share a few of the photos
I took of PR when I went back at Christmas 1990.
I've also gotten the opportunity to talk to other
PR'ers and gotten to know folks I wouldn't have
otherwise. Thanks for making the effort, my
friend. We all owe you a debt of gratitude!

Thanks for having the best Phan Rang site out
there. The memories you have brought back
through your site have been priceless.
Here the old work horse (c-123) and the men
who grew to love and care for her live on.
Keep up the good work.

Comments:         This is one of the best sites on the
Internet
reflecting life at Phan Rang Air Base and how it
was. Mike's website reflects a good pictorial
history of the base from its early construction
days to almost the time when USAF/Allied
operations ceased. All you Phan Rangers out there
let Mike and the rest of us know who you are. Any
contribution you want to make is most appreciated.

Vietnam. If you were in Phan Rang and leave this

your eye, you ain't been looking hard enough....
Great Mike..
